Introduction to Haryana Lok Sabha Elections 2024
The Haryana Lok Sabha elections of 2024 have played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of the state. As voters took to the polls, the significance of their participation was evident, impacting party dynamics and representation in the Lok Sabha. This blog post aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the election results and highlight the acquired voting seats of all the major parties that participated in this year's elections.
Results Overview: Party-wise Seat Distribution
This election is especially important as it marks the first in a decade and the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 in the J&K region.
Haryana held its elections on October 5, 2024, with more than 2 crore eligible voters participating across all 90 constituencies and 20,629 polling booths set up. The polls were initially scheduled for October 1 but were postponed by the Election Commission.
The elections for the 90-member assembly were conducted in three phases: the first on September 18, the second on September 25, and the third on October 1.
Exit polls indicated that Congress is likely to win, with most suggesting it could approach or exceed the two-thirds majority in the 90-member assembly. Three of the polls projected Congress to secure at least 50 seats, even at the lower end of their estimates, while the upper range suggested as many as 65 seats.
The fourth poll, published by Dainik Bhaskar, set the midpoint at 49 seats, surpassing the majority threshold of 46. All the polls concurred that the JJP, led by Dushyant Chautala, which had acted as a kingmaker five years ago, is expected to face a significant decline. Additionally, the INLD-BSP alliance is also projected to secure only a limited number of seats.
J&K Election Result 2024 Live: Congress- National Conference well placed to form govt, exit polls predicted
Exit polls indicated that the combined NC-Congress-CPM alliance holds a clear advantage over the BJP, while the PDP, which partnered with the BJP to form a government in 2014, is expected to face a significant decline.
However, two of the polls indicated that the NC alliance would fall short of the majority mark, even in an optimistic scenario, while the third suggested it might just reach that threshold. Nevertheless, with a significant number of independents and other candidates expected to win, and given that the PDP is unlikely to align with the BJP, the NC would likely be in a stronger position to form a government than the BJP.
Haryana Election 2024 Live: Congress high command will take final call on Haryana CM pick, said Selja
Congress, who is yet to announce its CM face in the state said that the high command will soom make a call keeping party's interests in mind.
"We feel that the Congress will get over 60 seats. The Congress has emerged as a major player in Haryana and it will form its government," she said.
"There is nothing like a game. It is more in the media. This speculation will remain till the final announcement is made. Neither I nor anyone else can say anything on this (CM candidate) and this will be known after the high command's announcement. Whatever decision the high command takes, it will be acceptable to all," she added.
J&K Election 2024 Live: Why are all eyes on 5 MLAs to be nominated by LG
The nominations will increase the strength of the House to 95, raising the majority mark to 48, a target none of the contenders are likely to reach independently based on exit polls. The National Conference (NC) and Congress have expressed concerns that the Lieutenant Governor, a nominee of the Centre, may use his authority to assist the BJP in the event of a split verdict. They assert that the LG can only act on the advice of the chief minister.
However, the BJP disputes this claim, arguing that the law clearly states that nominations are at the discretion of the LG. This nomination process is outlined in Section 15 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which was further amended on July 26, 2023.
Election Results Live: Mallikarjun Kharge said that confident of Congress forming govt in Haryana, J&K
"Earlier too we had said that in Haryana and Jammu Kashmir, the Congress government will be formed. In Jammu and Kashmir, Congress and NC (National Conference) alliance will form the government, and in Haryana Congress government will be formed," Kharge said.
Multiple exit polls indicate a strong majority for Congress in Haryana, while also favouring its alliance with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir, where the regional party is projected to emerge as the largest.
Assembly Election Results 2024 Live: Is Bhupinder Hooda ahead in race for CM?
As Haryana awaits the assembly poll results, the issue of chief ministership has taken center stage within Congress, with all eyes on the high command's next steps as the party aims to reclaim power after a decade. Unlike in 2019, Congress has allowed former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda considerable freedom in selecting candidates and shaping the election strategy. However, another influential leader, Dalit representative Kumari Selja, has entered the fray, complicating Hooda's position.
In a surprising move, AICC general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Selja has publicly expressed her desire for the CM position, stating that the final decision will rest with the high command if the party secures a victory. Conversely, Hooda has indicated that the opinions of the MLAs will be considered, emphasizing that the central leadership's decision will be accepted by all.
Additionally, senior leader Randeep Surjewala, also a general secretary and Rajya Sabha member, affirmed that the party high command will ultimately determine the chief minister, though he has not put forth his own claim.

"How does it matter? If we all work for the same thing, for improvement in the conditions of the people of the state, removing unemployment, removing all the distresses that have occurred in the last 10 years. First thing we should do is restore the freedom of the press. We should have the right to say what is true and what is not true. We can be rivals in elections but I have no objections and I am sure Congress will have no objections," he said.
"I will not go to beg before them. If they feel they can strengthen the state, most welcome. It should be their initiative. They should want to do good for the people," he said.

J&K Election 2024 Live: BJP playing 'nefarious' games to engineer majority, said Congress
"Facing imminent defeat, the BJP is playing desperate games to engineer a majority and hoping for a hung assembly to aid them in their subterfuge," he said.
"To undo this democratic process, they have resorted to the old ways of their self-proclaimed bogus 'Chanakya-niti.' We have clear information and basis to say that malicious steps are being taken through a colourable and malafide exercise of power to negate the people's verdict in favour of the INC-NC alliance in J&K," Jairam Ramesh said.
"We will do everything in our power to thwart such nefarious designs," he added.
Election Results Live: Voter turnout in Haryana was lower across regions than 2019 polls
In the recently concluded assembly elections in Haryana, most regional areas, including the GT Road belt and the Ahirwal belt, experienced a decline in voter turnout compared to the 2019 elections, with the exception of Mewat.
This shift in voting patterns could significantly impact the formation of the state's next government. The Ahirwal belt, for instance, has long been a BJP stronghold, especially after Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh transitioned from Congress to the BJP. Meanwhile, constituencies predominantly inhabited by Jaat voters have historically favoured the Congress party.
Interestingly, Mewat was the only region to record a slight increase in voter turnout, indicating a potential revival of voter engagement following years of communal tensions, particularly after the riots in Nuh in July 2023. The variations in voter participation across these regional belts could play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of Haryana.
Haryana Election 2024 Result Live: Agnipath scheme remained a major poll talk this election
Agnipath scheme, launched in 2022, has significantly impacted the job aspirations of many young individuals, particularly in Haryana. The scheme has become a major election issue for both aspiring candidates and their families, reflecting widespread discontent. This is especially relevant in a state where the unemployment rate among those aged 15-29 is slightly above the national average, according to government data for 2023-24.
In Haryana, jobs in the armed forces are highly coveted due to the economic benefits and social prestige they provide. Communities often honour soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice by erecting village gateways in their memory. Among various caste groups, Jaats have been particularly vocal in their opposition to the Agnipath scheme, which allows an Agniveer to serve in the army for just four years, with only 25% of each cohort being offered a full-term position.

Paswan, a member of the BJP-led coalition through his Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), shared his views with reporters shortly before the vote counting began in the northern state and the Union territory.
"I believe that given the NDA's track record on governance, it will win in both Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. Of course, exit polls suggest otherwise. But, I have often seen these polls going wrong," he said.

Election Results 2024 Live: Urban apathy dragging down overall turnout, laments EC
The Election Commission expressed concern over the persistent urban apathy in Haryana, which continues to negatively impact the overall voter turnout in the state. The commission noted that voters in rural areas demonstrated greater enthusiasm by turning up at polling stations in higher numbers. In the assembly elections held on Saturday, Haryana recorded a voter turnout of 67.9 per cent across its 90 constituencies.
According to the EC, the voter turnout in the recent assembly elections shows a significant improvement compared to the last Lok Sabha elections, where the state recorded a turnout of 64.8 per cent. The current figures "nearly" match the turnout of the 2019 assembly elections, which stood at 68.3 per cent.
The Election Commission has been grappling with the issue of 'urban and youth apathy', a phenomenon where voters in metropolitan areas, particularly the younger generation, tend to remain at home instead of visiting polling stations to exercise their right to vote on election day. This trend continues to be a challenge for the poll panel in its efforts to increase voter participation.

Not giving farmers a fair price for their crops, not accepting their demands--these issues have caused distress among the farmers of Haryana, as we saw during the farmers' protest. An anti-BJP sentiment has developed among the farmers in Haryana."
"Khattar's reputation has been so damaged that he couldn't hold a meeting in Haryana for an entire year. In this context, it was clear that the situation for the INDIA bloc is better this time. The result of October 8 will go against the BJP," the CPI(M) leader added.

Election Results 2024 Live: 'Congress looking for excuse for its defeat in Haryana', says BJP
The BJP on Tuesday made light of the Congress raising the issue of "unexplained slowdown" of the Haryana poll results on the Election Commission website as the opposition party's attempt to build excuses for its impending defeat in the state elections. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi asserted that the trends in the counting of votes have made it clear that the ruling party is heading for a "glorious, decisive and historic" mandate in Haryana and will notch up its best ever show in Jammu and Kashmir.
Asked about the Congress writing to the EC over the "unexplained slowdown" which allows "bad faith actors to spin narratives" that undermine the process, he mocked the opposition party for raising such an issue.
It is a factually incorrect position to take, he said, adding that counting agents of the Congress are also there at booths to witness the proceedings.
"The Congress is merely making an excuse in the view of its impending defeat," the Rajya Sabha MP said.
